About

We are Domestic Abuse WA12 CIC’s co-founders and both survivors of domestic abuse.

During our journeys when we needed a support system to help us leave the abuser to keep ourselves and our children safe or to start to rebuild ourselves, we found that available services were hidden or limited, not available to us or there was a long waiting list (some we still haven’t had contact from several years later). When in trauma support is needed immediately.

It is no secret that there are gaps in services and particularly in Newton -le-Willows. We are served by St Helens services or in some cases Merseyside area, it is understandable that ‘some’ people fall through the gaps.

There are many reasons someone may struggle to access help and support. But with domestic abuse the reasons become very real barriers, not knowing where to access help, not feeling safe, believed, financial constraints, restricted / monitored use of phones/ internet, oversubscribed services etc.

This is why survivor–led support is so powerful and an important tool in someone’s recovery. It allows for a non judgemental, safe and understanding support network where others have had similar experiences.

After individually supporting people to access help and support, listening to repeat frustrations at the lack of support and upset at not being heard or understood. We decided to join forces officially and bridge these gaps ourselves.

Since establishing in January 2022 we work voluntarily. We have grown a team of local independant providers of therapies, healing, workshops and training.   We have supported, provided different options of recovery and healing and learning to those in need. In addition to signposting, provided a listening ear or a shoulder be it current or historic. Unlike broken bones the effects of emotional abuse do not heal. Mental health, wellbeing and life choices are detrimentally affected by this lived abuse on going as well as that of our children and families.

The daily referrals are continually growing in volume. Statistically in the last two years recorded domestic abuse incidents have doubled and it is becoming it’s own pandemic. Police call centres are being over whelmed by the sheer volume of domestic abuse calls.

Domestic Abuse WA12, aim to provide knowledge and understanding around domestic abuse through our workshops and seminars. Identifying its’ causes and indicators to enable the breaking of the domestic abuse cycle.

Since June 2023 we started an additional project alongside the core work we do. We help to save food from supermarkets, from going to landfill. Working in conjunction with Fareshare and Neighbourly, we collect and redistribute food to our domestic abuse clients, and the further general population, whoever needs it  in Newton le willows. Domestic Abuse WA12 Foodshare (facebook) we have food available daily.

You are not a victim for sharing your story. You are a survivor.
